Helping badly is worse than not helping
In 2015, researchers followed 438 first and second graders and their primary caregivers. The finding: children of math-anxious parents learned less math across the school year and were more likely to become math-anxious themselves — but only when those parents frequently helped with math homework. Reading achievement, used as a control, showed no such relationship.
The anxiety travels along with the help. It rides in on “ugh, I was never a math person,” on the sigh before you look at the worksheet, on the speed with which you take the pencil.
The takeaway is not stop helping. It’s that how you help is doing more work than whether you can solve the problem. Which is genuinely good news, because most of us can’t solve the problem.
That’s not a personal failing, either. The National Center for Families Learning found in 2014 that 60% of parents of K–8 kids had trouble helping with homework — up from 49% the year before. A third of them gave the plainest reason there is: they didn’t understand the subject matter.
Why August and September are the hard weeks
Math is the subject that leaks over the summer. An NWEA analysis reported in May 2026 found students lose the equivalent of 10% to 30% of a typical school year’s math learning over the break, while average reading scores stayed roughly flat between spring and fall.
The reason is mundane: reading happens by accident. Kids read menus, captions, group chats, the backs of cereal boxes. Nobody accidentally practices long division in July.
So the first weeks of school aren’t a fair read on what your kid knows. A fourth grader who looks lost on fractions in mid-August is usually rusty, not broken — and rust comes off faster than a real gap does. Four questions that work when you don’t know the answer
You are not the second teacher. You’re the person who makes your kid say their reasoning out loud, which is where the error becomes visible — to them, not just to you.
- “Read me the question. What is it actually asking for?” A startling share of wrong answers are correctly-executed math on the wrong question. This catches it in fifteen seconds and requires zero math from you.
- “Show me the one before this that you got right.” The completed problems are the answer key and the method. Comparing the two is often the whole fix, and your kid finds it, not you.
- “Where exactly did it stop making sense?” Not “what don’t you get” — that gets “all of it.” You want the line number. Naming the stuck point is half of unsticking it.
- “What would you try if I weren’t sitting here?” Kids downshift into helplessness when an adult is available. This question hands the problem back without abandoning them.
Notice that none of these require you to know how to do the math. They require you to be curious and unhurried, which is a much more available skill at 8:30 on a Tuesday than remembering the quadratic formula.
The 20-minute rule, and permission to stop
Set a hard stop at about 20 minutes on any single problem you’re both stuck on. Past that, you are no longer teaching math. You’re teaching that math is where the evening goes bad, and that lesson sticks far better than the fractions do.
Then leave it undone. Write one line to the teacher: “Maya spent 20 minutes on #7 and we couldn’t get it — she was stuck on the second step.” That note is genuinely useful to a teacher. It tells her something the completed worksheet never would. An unfinished problem isn’t a failure; it’s a data point you just handed to the person who’s paid to use it.
One more thing worth retiring: “just do it my way.” Your method probably works and probably gets the right answer.
